Mum and Dad was "templed" out... I love the BURMESE...

I've decided not to make this post so arduous with the daily excerpts of what took place. It would even drive me insane. So the short version is we spent a couple more days in Bagan including a day cycling, 2 days in Mandalay which was really depressing after Bagan and then the last 3 days in Inle Lake which was amazing. PS Don't forget the afternoon siestas each day...

I have to say that I had the best time in Bagan apart from the ballooning, the temples were excellent. I'm not going to bore you with more pics. My bad was I didn't bring myself a pair of thongs/slippers and therefore had to take off my shoes every single time when we entered a temple. Thank god there was always a pair at the hotel we were in.

It was really difficult to get your mobiles working in Burma - SIMs are available in the blackmarket but they'd probably want squillion of dollars for it. Anyway, we were not prepared to get into trouble with the junta. So here is a local phone booth pic... I guess you pay the guy for usage probably just local calls.

There were also the people across all of Burma that I would like to thank - I can still remember your smiles, hellos and goodbyes. I am already missing you...

Till next time Myanmar - we'll be back....

Bagan - Of days gone by : Day 1

Old Bagan has over 3000 stupas/chedis littered across its environs. You have to see it to believe it. It even smells of old days gone by with characters to fit. We arrrived in Bagan and was immediately herded to a festival cum procession where young children were taking their first steps into monk/nunhood, if that is what they're called. Maybe Lee can explain this better? Some of them were so young that they looked utterly confused but their parents were oh so proud, to say the least.

The guide explained that this was a momentus period for the parents - it was also sadly an event to show off your wealth. For those not able to afford to take care of their offspring, this is an opportunity to let the monastry take over for a year till things get better. The contradiction baffled me but I decided to keep my opinions to myself. The European vacationers were nonetheless thrilled - they were everywhere, some with rather huge 300mm lenses slammed against the faces of 3-year olds.

I was too embarassed so did only manage to get some decent shots. I need to be more agressive at times but that is just not me.

We headed to the local market next. You won't believe this but they have rats on skewers - apparently quite tasty like chicken. It was eerie how they were dissected... put me off meat for the whole day.

There was also the usual cheroot smoking granny - wanting us to take her picture for US$1. I'm not much of a smoker so the thought of promoting cancer, having lost a parent to the disease, made me really upset. The partner understood and kept quiet for the next hour while I went on one of my verbal mission to ban tobacco for good. If you love someone make it known I say and keep them safe.

I refused to take her picture!!

So after having my moment, that was it for the day. We went off to have our afternoon siesta and was then left to our own devices with the expectation of early morning 5am wakeup call to go ballooning the day after. I was very excited - apart from the fact that Mr. Lee was going to be there and I can quiz him a little more for some local knowledge of customs and cultures from an expat perspective, it would be my first experience. Magic!

Something for Pinoyboy

Pinoyboy - yes have been going around thinking, "hey Pinoyboy might like that pic, and that one and that one too". So here's a couple for you.

A food stall in Chatuchak market at 9am.

Hawkers preparing for the day at Chatuchak

How can you go wrong for a dollar?

Burmese Noodles and Condiments - Yummm Yummm

Something for Andrew

Andrew - so many beautiful and serene buddhas, you would have loved it. So here's a couple of images for you.... everything is very quiet in Burma - you could find solace knowing that there are still places where you can seek refuge from the rigours of the world.

This is the other image that I'm planning to print a T-Shirt on. Have a think guys and get back to me.....

Something for John Ong....

9 am breakfast at Chatuchak Market - I have my reservations about eating out....so this was just a visual feast.

'Gula-Gula Tarik' Yangon style. They're actually toffee that you suck on which are stringy.... "gula-gula tarik" means sweets that you can pull. Very literal but maybe John might have something more colloquial in Malaysia?

Something for Peter....

How much shit can you take in a day? Apparently Billion Million in Thailand!

This is also very cute - an aloe type plant shaped like hearts at Valentines! The Thais can be so sweet sometimes.

Yangon Oh my Yangon - Where have you gone?

Well I thought I'd drop a pic of the new Bangkok airport first. The Suvarnabhumi airport is really in deep shit operationally. It was so disorganised with baggages coming out of belts that are not even on the electronic screen so be forewarned about the information you get. It is better to follow the crowd. And if you're on any airline apart from Thai, you won't get to use the skybridge. It is a shambles. Immigration in Thailand and Burma were also displeased that I had an Australian passport coz I looked like one of them.

The counter staff at Singapore Airlines wasn't very helpful either - we were unable to check in our luggage 3 hours before coz they had nowhere to put them. There was another lady that had waiting for 7 hours to check in her luggage. At this point in time, I became very buddhist and let everything slide - we were afterall on vacation.

I think our flight was mostly filled with Euro travellers as they all looked so exhausted by the time they got to the boarding area. Have a look at the guy in the centre - he had such rosy cheeks. Not too sure why but I thought that it was just strange to have rosy cheeks in Bangkok in all that heat and if you move your eyes to the right, there is a guy with a goatee... I like goatees.... they all really looked exhausted. Thank god we had 3 days in Bangkok to eat and sleep - just enough time to feel that we were on our second holiday within a holiday.

We arrived in Yangon by mid morning and had lunch. The Traders Hotel was where we stayed 7 years ago and we were back there again. Dinner was US$16 with all the beer and wine you can drink with an international buffet to boot. It wasn't too bad especially with free flow of beer so we took the offer with open arms. Burma is getting busier - much more so than we had expected. Where at one point in time there were hardly any traffic, Yangon was buzzing big time.

We headed to Sule Pagoda which was just around the corner from where we stayed and eventually ended up at Scotts Bogyoke Market. It would have been good to see the markets when we there years ago - it is just too touristy now with nuns begging all over the place eventhough begging hours are supposedly around the early mornings until 9am where the monks/nuns would take their breakfast each day. These are the strays - even our guide was saying that they could just be wearing those garb to pull a fast one on us!! Who knows?

Shwedagon is still as magnificent as we remembered it to be. I can still remember how young I was when we had our first picture taken here. Not that we're ancient but it was 7 years ago - I consider being 29 rather youthful. We arrived in the evening and spent an hour waiting for the sun to set... it was different because there were loads of devotees and we really could feel the ambience this time around. It was just amazingly quiet eventhough there were people everywhere.

There were really some fantastic photo opportunities along the way. My camera though was acting up on manual so lost a couple of pics especially the evening shots but what can you do...c'est la vie. The Pro1 apparently doesn't like a polariser lens when on manual? Maybe it just needs a service? Enjoy the pics guys...from YANGON we headed to Bagan, a real early flight throughout the trip - 5am wakeup call. Till then....

Lets make a T-Shirt together : Peter, Pinoyboy and Andrew!!

Guys I'm thinking of printing this image on a T-SHIRT. It is taken from Dhammayangyi in Bagan which is believed to be haunted by the locals. Lets make T-SHIRTS!! Email me your sizes and colour preference....

Mingalabah Mr. Lee!

I am finally back from vacation and have had a fabulous holiday this time around - it was amazing and met one new fab friend originally from Bristol so all in all quite pleasurable. Myanmar is still as alluring as ever especially Bagan and Inle Lake and the people still remains the beautiful souls that they are. I have tons of pics but lets keep that for another day. So lets start with the light stuff first.

The first three days were spent in Bangkok sorting out our visas. Wish Pinoyboy was here coz he'd be so fascinated with all the 'japaneseque' goodies that is all around the shops. It will be just so wild going shopping together - it is still as good as Hong Kong and Japan but just a little cheaper to get goofy stuff! A pic at the market - really cool hats and to those that are not sure what Pocky's are, here is a tribute to Pinoyboy - a pic. I found this at LOFT!

I have been eating, eating and eating all the time so here is a couple more pics of food. Andrew I've put on 4kgs in 3 weeks so I'm avoiding rice for the next few weeks. Bastard! All that hard work for the past 3 months down the tubes but did I eat!

During that time, I was able to pass through a couple of wet markets. A couple of pics for everyone especially Pinoyboy.

I grew up with a wet market around the corner but that was year's ago in Singapore and have always remembered how I'd hold my breath when my mother coerced me to follow here into the abyss. I have to say I've never been good with wet markets. The strange difference between the wet markets of Thailand and Burma is the fact that Burma's 'wet market' is pretty dry. So here is a pic of a wet market in Inle Lake (2950ft above sea level) - everything looks pretty decent even the naked chicken in Bagan.

I have so much to write but still feeling a little jet lagged...not too sure why - maybe its because I've been running around cleaning the house and doing the dirty laundry from the holidays. I should have just left it there but I'm not one of those to wait till shit hits the fan. So here is a pic of the sunset on the Ayerwaddy.... words cannot explain how I felt then. It was one of the best...

One of the highlight of the trip was Ballooning over Bagan. Have to write a whole new post on that one. We met a wonderful man, Mr. Lee Hooper, the chief pilot, whom shared a rather unsavoury experience of an Aussie getting sick in the basket -orifices galore. We can still smell the experience! I'd like to wish him all the best coz he's good value and we hope to see you in Bhutan (Putao) real soon Lee.

Till next time guys, I think I will be more agreeable when I've had some decent sleep. So to Peter, Pinoyboy and Andrew - I miss you all loads and have been downloading your podcasts....

Last but not least, a image taken over Valentine's day. My room boy was excellent and not too bad looking too and here's a pic of me with some real big pussies!! Till next time...

Down & Out : Down Under!

From the latest Australian Macworld:
"The iPhone will be released in June in the US in two versions: a 4GB and an 8Gb one. Jobs said Apple plans to bring the iPhone to Europe in the fourth calendar quarter of 2007, and to Asia (including Australia) in 2008 ( by which time specifics of the product are almost certain to have changed. Jobs also announced two accessories for the iPhone: stereo headphones with integrated microphone, and a Bluetooth headset that pairs automatically with the iPhone and goes to sleep to preserve battery life. Of course, no local pricing was available for this product".

We are down under but shouldn't always be down and out with our technologies!! Bloody tech Nazis - they're everywhere I say!!

1/2 MORE DAYS TO THE HOLIDAYS

Ok guys I've finally decided to put a real picture of myself and a work colleague (Felicity) so that I don't look odd on my own. Seriously, just 1/2 more days to go. I'm all excited and can't wait to get out the building.

The weather has been really wicked in Adelaide so turning a real brown just by being in the car. Ironically people in the US are experiencing the worst wind chill ever? We are screwed... I wonder what winter will be like when it comes...

So salutations to Mark, Andrew, Peter & Pinoyboy, John Ong (Mr. Bon Voyage! or Mr. American Express) and Brad... I'll miss you guys, your emails, your blogs, your podcasts and your..... Promise to get back to being a good little listener at the end of Feb!!

SUMO DO SUMO DON'T: I Look Great in my loins...

I was listening to Episode #166 and remembered how my partner and I were really big. Being small in stature - I was relatively huge for my size ( I was DJ Doughboy for awhile). We have let ourselves go for quite sometime and have indulged far too much on hot chips with chicken salt, Sweets, Roast chicken, Chocolate Rolls, Caramel Eggs, Pavlovas and many other things that we are too embarrassed to mention. When we let go, we really let go. It has been a gruelling 6 months but we are slowly getting there. Both of us has lost some weight and the partner has a new set of wardrobe. Where is this heading? Well I thought we'd swing back to the wardrobe blog I wrote earlier coz I know how difficult it is to even start contemplating buying clothes without knowing what helps and what doesn't.

So here we go with some real advice. PS before we begin though the PDS should also include a change in lifestyle and a bit of exercise.

1. Larger not longer.
Avoid pleated chinos. A flat-front, slim-fitting chino is much better with a solid-colored pullover.
Never buy a jacket that sits lower than the bottom of your pockets. It will make you short and fat...done that look more than once.

2. Hem lines.
You know how jackets and 3/4 cargos are really the in thing these days? Well you need to look at your height and ensure that the hem lines sit around knee length - anything shorter or longer will make you look bigger or ill-proportioned as per 1 above.

3. Light shirt/Dark pants mix.
Try light shirt with light pants when you're out and about. I know earlier I spoke about wearing warm colours but that is more for a shoot rather than a casual night out or afternoon stroll. Dark pants in pictures hides more. We tried these recently with the light coloured mix and was pleasantly surprised at how slimming it looked.

4. Shirts
The partner has recently purchased loads of cotton but patterned shirts. They're the all around types that are subtle with little textured stitches. It seems to work as the stitches are not too bold and when they're patterned, the overall effect is rather soothing (single coloured patterns though). We got rid of all the over-sized shirt we use to get from GAP/OldNavy/Country Road etc. - that went to the Salvos and many sweaters that were just too big.

5. Belts
Well these are hard to find and really really important. The usual ones you'll find on the rack rolls around the belly making you look bigger than you are and they don't really hold your pants up. The width of the belt itself and the mix of pants and the strength of the loops are very important. We've gone for textured belts that are at least an inch and a half wide. The fact that the chinos are no longer pleated also helps to avoid the ballooning effect. We also made sure that the length of the crotch is sufficient - not too long, not too short.

A couple of things I might add is a checked shirt. Maybe it is just me but a good Gant check shirt is always an option. The cut these days are very good - they have ones that are pretty roomy around the gut and make excellent corduroy pants (no pleats - 5 pockets) especially in their autumn collection which are affordable i.e. less than $99 when on sale. They also make good 5 pockets blue jeans - we've got rid of all our light jeans. You'd be surprised what dark jeans can do for you.

I promise to take some pictures of what I mean in the next couple of weeks. And yes to Pinoyboy, I bought my jockstrap - apparently they have one for runners which is a 100% cotton. I was elated to no end - I needed a medium so its on back order.

Happy shopping guys and always remember to press your shirt. Come over for a beer and a BBQ anytime. So here is a pic of Jake in all his Commando glory - something for the boys : Peter, Pinoyboy, Andrew, John, Ben and Brad.... I'll have one of those jockstrap please.

Just 3 more days to the holidays...

The weekend was great and relaxing apart from the scorching heat. The steering wheel to the car did not take kindly to the tan the day before so it was a walk into the city and a real nice lunch at the EROS Ouzeri - a Greek restaurant serving Tapas. Have not done that in a while....there was also the weekend street market but the heat kept everyone away; that's Adelaide for you. Really looking forward to the holidays - just wanting to get out from the routine of work, reports, spreadsheets, reconciliations and everything else that has to do with bloody numbers (auditors).

Sunday was BBQ day - Shashlik and lamb. It was easy and quick but ended up with fat all over from the smoke. Strangely enough I thought about how delicious I would be to a lamb lover right then... the new BBQ is also working a treat - all the fat just falls off the meat, literally.

Wiped out my nano yesterday though while trying to install new software so that took awhile to sort out but finally got everything ready for the trip. Some lounge, hard house, R&B and jazz. Will miss listening to the Ohmypod, Andrewfaith, Ongline, 773podcast soon for the next 2-3 weeks so guys my apologies if I disappear from the face of the planet but Burma's junta is afraid of technology. I'll have pictures for you though ... absence just makes the heart grows fonder.

So what if I'm fat - Dolce & Gabbana still loves me.

I've been listening to http://www.ohmypod.net/ and they've been great with my IMac dilemmas and jargon crunching. Also pics of John Ong with his podcast setup at his flickr account and listening to his #200 show has somewhat changed my perception of podcasters in general.

So this is a formal thank you, thank you, thank you to Peter and Pinoyboy for being so patient. Pinoyboy you lazy sod write me!!! Peter *smile* *smile*. John stop - don't stop! I have now made up my mind to get my new IMac when OS Leopard is rolled out in Australia. It will be very interesting and I am tingled with excitement, Tingled pink I say.... fidget with the widget!!

In exchange for their generosity I bestow upon them the gift of the 4Cs in Fashion :

1. Colour
2. Cut
3. Comfort
4. Cost

Sound like a carat to me but here we go.... (hmmmm bunnies, bunneeiiissss)

Colour is very important or else we'd be born colour blind. You will need to be acutely aware of the colour of your hair, skin, eyes and what will look good on you or otherwise. Fashion always dictates seasonal colours but remember that fabric is also integral. Some colours just looks odd on certain fabric so choose wisely. Creases on linens are fine as long as they're good quality linen and remains neutral. Good linen should straighten up just by steam alone. Don't put way too much stuff in your pockets please - the hobo look is not going to cut it. Light wool or cashmere is the way to go in winter and layer forward and back - allowing you this flexibility if you are always on the move each day is a good habit to keep. Lighter wool and cashmere surprisingly keeps heat better. Its not in the size....

One of my photographer friend's advice when taking portraits is to make sure that the client is wearing solid colours which will accentuate their appearance especially if it is for a magazine shot. Solid warm colours make good photographs over light backgrounds.

Warm colours are also more suitable I believe for darker skin individuals while neutrals are better for olive skin when you're out and about - but this again relate pretty much to which continent you're in. Cheap fabric is bad on any colour! These are the two extreme circumstances but for those in the middle i.e. the chameleon skin that changes with the seasons, the mix of colours can be varied...lucky bastards.

Black is boring, safe but boring. Corduroy jackets (RL has some nice ones) are interesting - even linen ones; they come across as relaxed and sophisticated. There are different grades of velvet and good velvet will not combust on you so if you're tailoring one, the tailor will not be afraid to get a flame up close to show you the actual quality item you're buying and the reason why its $300 a metre. Good velvet don't burn.

I have found that Olive skin or light skin individuals look striking in shades of green and azure blue. This is for the very reason that it will pick up not only the colour of their eyes but that of their skin. Apart from that, there is a greyness which is apparent in big cities whereas in the tropics you can never compete against the lushness of the environs without looking like a tourist - hawaiian shirts should remain in Hawaii.

Colours in accessories are also important be it in a scarf, glove, hat or belt - remember not too many texture on coloured accessory and vice versa as it will take away the focus off your outfit - be demure not desperate and remember blend and layer. Some pucci diehards will disagree but you can't wear anything else with pucci but pucci much like Paul Smith - the men stuff are fine but still you need to be the size of a stick insect on crack to wear those.

Cut - this is key. Certain cuts are not made for you be it shoes, shirt, pants or suit. Argue as much as you can about, "oh but I look so gorjuice in that shirt!' . Walk away and come back - if you think that you will still look good in that real tight spandex jacket then buy it. Until you're ready always ask a friend to go with you. There are various cuts to Jeans these days so not all sizes are identical - some may have a slightly longer crotch, slightly higher waistline etc. Try everything before buying. Try dozens if you have to and don't be afraid to tell the staff that none of them are a real fit.

In case of suits, length is important - how it sits on the back, the cuff length, the way the stripped fabric has been sewed together and the shoulders. A good tailor will give you at least a dozen collars to choose from and cuffs too. Everything must sit right - so choose your buttons wisely and where they sit on your tum tum. Button choices also vary and you should choose those too.

I always recommend tailoring one good suit and agree with Pinoyboy about upping the casual look with a tailor made jacket - it says 'I'm happy with the way I look and I have something more to offer than just the jeans I'm wearing!" Asians also fit well in Italian cut clothes in terms of measurement and length. Get yourself a good leather jacket. It says raw but ripe. The smell of a man in a well cut leather jacket - well I don't have to explain that one ...bunnnieesss more bunnieesss....

Comfort - I have to say that I'm a victim of wearing things that looks really good but are way way too tight. So if you are going to spend $500 on a pair of shoes, make sure they really really fit with and without socks. For suits, ensure that the tailoring is spot on. I recommend a fitted suit rather than off the rack because not everyone is buffed like a mannequin with pecs the size of Tasmania or Texas - hmm Texans.... Anyway comfort is really important so choose your fabric well and get to know your tailor intimately.

One good suit is good enough. Contrary to everyone's suggestion that you should buy two sizes up coz you might gain some weight, I recommend otherwise - certain things are cheap and not worth trying to keep for 5 years for a 'just in case' moment unless it is a Zegna suit. Show your asset coz it will make you feel good about yourself. Bring SEXY back - hell just bring on the sex! Imagine watching a clump of meat looking real comfortable in a $500 moo moo? Not good. Fitted is the way to go because it says you are confident with what you're wearing whether its $5 or $500.

Cost - well this is a real touchy topic. I shop and when I shop, I shop but these days I am a spectrum shopper i.e. I buy my jeans at the prospect of it lasting more than 5 years therefore $300 a pair is good diminishing returns. I buy the same jeans in a minimum of 2 colours.

Matching them with cheaper tops gives me the luxury of a different look each day. I can go preppy, casual, nerdy, adventurous, stylish and cool all within a week by just changing my top. People only look at your crotch and ass - they won't remember the label but they will recall how everything just sits right. I buy linen/silk when I am in Asia because they're so much cheaper and of better quality - you can buy it at the cost of 5 to 1.

I buy italian shoes for work and will splurge on one big spend a year while the rest remains casual and under $100. A pair of running shoes will last me 12 months. To save money, I buy a season behind coz who cares about what people are wearing now- remember yesterday's fashion has always been today's news. Black and brown are safe but these days colours are in for shoes and so are the fabrics e.g. prada, diesel, moreschi, magli, bally and tod. One good shoe is enough - it will last you years so buy more casual shoes that are cheap and replaceable in 12 months. Get a couple of loafers as they good for dashing out of the house when you've overslept. I must recommend at least one loafer - they are indispensable.

A wardrobe makeover is still affordable and a cleanout is important to revitalise and make you a power dresser. Don't sit on anything that is older than 3 years - get it to the salvos and they will put it to good use and never ever ignore the discount rack. Keeping your closet clean helps you with your self image - a wardrobe should be progressive and ever evolving.

So here we are at the end of the 4Cs. I know it is nothing new but sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves especially when we settle down. Life is so hurried that we ignore the fact that we are beautiful people and looking like Nosferatu is not helping - gaultier aside.

So remember - Sex & Fashion is nothing without you! You bloody tell them what you want now mister and make sure they work hard for your money!! If not, you can always get your own personal stylist - just make sure he's hot.
